Sustainable Internationalization of Canadian Higher Education: Insights From International Master's of Education Programs

Abstract

In recent years, the topic of sustainable internationalization has been gaining traction. Sustainable internationalization links ecological references with internationalization and promotes a holistic exploration of the complexity and diversity of internationalization(Ilieva et al., 2014). In this study, sustainable internationalization is used as the theoretical framework to examine the operation of five international Master of Education programs. Such programs could fulfil recruitment goal and bring in huge financial return, yet current research reported mixed feelings from students and fell short on the needed insights for Canadian higher education to achieve sustainable internationalization. Using document analysis, this study revealed that factors such as profit orientation, operation, and promotion have an impact on the overall implementation of such programs and require further examination.
