What benefits might the use of poetry have for scholars? As the title denotes, poetry may be a way for scholars to look outside themselves. A scholar generally lives in a familiar universe. We have the literature in our field, we go to conferences and talk to familiar people. This is not a bad thing- we are supposed to be experts. Poetry and arts-based research however may be able to help us reflect in new ways on our disciplines, research specializations and fields, on our own evolving corpus of knowledge and how we interact with colleagues and students that we teach. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this task.
