Our study features microethnographies exhibiting the experiences of Chinese students studying in the United States during the COVID-19 period. The presentation is dual-pronged: we illuminate the holistic experience of these marginalized students, and we explore ways to expand the qualitative methods toolbox for times of crisis, when conventional methods fail. In particular, we expand upon the emergent fields of digital and speculative ethnography(ies), with roots in postqualitative inquiry, and argue that these emergent fields are well suited to address populations who exist on the margins of collegiate life.
