Inglés Sin Límites: How Uruguay Is Making English Accessible to Students From Primary Rural Schools

Abstract

Accessibility to English as a foreign language teaching has not always been equitable across regions of different countries. Oftentimes, rural areas are found at a disadvantage due to the lack of teachers equipped with the language skills necessary to teach another language. Taking this into account, Uruguay developed a program called Inglés sin Límites with the purpose of offering English education in rural schools. This program consists of a self-driven course where teachers and students co-learn the language together through a communicative approach. The teachers take on the role of facilitators and are expected to teach the class and learn the language alongside the students. This paper offers an overview of the program and provides an analysis of the outcomes.
