A Dialogic/Performance Analysis of a Latina's Resistance Narrative in STEM

Abstract

This study analyzed the narrative of a Latina engineer to uncover how oppressive power operates in the experiences of minoritized individuals in STEM. The theoretical perspectives guiding the study were intersectional feminism and feminist narrative methodology, both of which recognize the lived experiences of women as valid and valuable windows into broader sociopolitical phenomena. Findings show that through both content (what was said) and form (how it was said) of her narrative, the study participant was able to make sense of, and push back against, oppressive manifestations of power in STEM. Findings also show how her narrative illuminates how power dynamics shape the experiences of women of color and other minoritized individuals in STEM more broadly.
