Responding to the call for an equitable educational system, this paper re-constructs the higher education environment and experience that an international doctoral student negotiates within. Four video segments from September 2020 to April 2021, with a common theme of funding-searching, were selected as data. With narrative analysis, key components from the narratives were identified and further re-organized. The results unfold the narrator's proactive actions and the resistant voices throughout the trajectory. By revealing the "de facto", this work contributes to both the scholarly work and educational practice by unveiling the potential limitations of the current U.S. educational system, as well as breaking surface understandings of how international students position themselves in their overseas educational experience.
