Fri, April 22, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the association between students’ approaches to learning and study-related burnout during the first year of higher education during COVID-19 pandemic, and further, to explore these associations with a person-oriented approach. The participants were 384 first-year, life science students who answered a questionnaire at the beginning and the end of their first year with Likert-type and open-ended questions. Structural equation modeling was done to analyse the associations and K-means clustering and ANOVA analyses were carried out to examine the different profiles and differences in their perceptions of burnout. Students’ experiences of studying were analysed qualitatively. The results show that a surface approach to learning is most strongly related to experiences of burnout.
