Vision, Capability, and Collaboration: Establishing the Vital Principles That Foster Evidence-Informed Practice

Abstract

Cultivating equitable education systems for the 21st century requires equitable educational practices. There is a growing understanding that evidence-informed teaching and leadership helps prevent the pitfalls of, for example, teacher conformation bias or self-fulfilling prophecies. We consider evidence-informed practice (EIP) as a wise combination of research, data and professional expertise. EIP improves the effectiveness and fairness of educators’ teaching, decision-making and ongoing professional learning. In this paper we outline the vital principles required to achieve EIP across any school or school system. Derived from a literature review and comparative analyses of 25 countries and jurisdictions, our three vital principles are: vision, capability and collaboration. These principles are discussed as well as translated into recommendations for policy and practice.
