A Mixed-Methods Study of Using SLOs in the Evaluation of Teacher Effectiveness

This study used a mixed-methods design and explored teachers’ perspectives of student learning objectives (SLOs) in the evaluation of teacher effectiveness. Data analysis based on a survey with 244 teachers and interviews with 18 teachers revealed that teachers had mixed views regarding the impact of SLOs on teaching and learning. Early career teachers reported more positive views of SLOs, less knowledge about SLOs, and more support needed in implementing SLOs. Teachers faced various challenges related to limited instructional time, inappropriate timeline, abundant paperwork, too much teacher autonomy and lack of supervision, missing some standards, assessment reliability and validity, applicability to certain subjects, and lack of feedback. The findings could inform teacher evaluation and professional development.
