Desire Lines as Artographic Assemblage: Learning-With Nonhuman Species

Abstract

This paper follows ‘desire lines’ as theorized by Ramsden (2017), and observed in animal-human animal relations. Thinking with new materialist, feminist, and philosophical theorists Brian Massumi, Donna Haraway, Karen Barad, and the emergent and continuously reconceptualized possibilities of artography, this paper situates stories following ‘desire lines’ during the 2020 pandemic of three scholars living in varied Canadian landscapes, learning-with different nonhuman species. As artists, researchers, and teachers we reflect on what we can know through our experiences with nonhuman species and how paying attention to these relations further encourages a caring, ethical, reciprocal, and attentive orientation in the constitution of shared worlds.
