Using elements of formative assessment and guided by Dweck’s (2006) conceptualization of growth mindset, this study used differentially structured feedback on assessments to investigate the relation between assessment and mindsets. Participants took a psychology quiz, and either received detailed process-oriented feedback throughout the quiz or summative scoring afterwards. Results demonstrated that participants who received detailed feedback improved performance more than participants who received summative scoring. No differences in growth mindset, perceptions of feedback, or persistence were detected. This research line may illuminate classroom assessment practices that could be leveraged for developing students’ growth mindsets and self-efficacy.
