Although the history of education in Nepal has been researched extensively, the nation-state has largely served as the fundamental unit of inquiry. As a result, historical entanglements and educational initiatives prior to the mid-twentieth century have been largely overlooked. Based on an explorative analysis of the life and publications of the relatively forgotten early 20th century educator and intellectual Jaya Prithvi Bahadur Singh, this paper aims to sheds new light on the educational history of the Himalaya. By employing a lens of global history, the study renders visible manifold global entanglements of the region with the rest of the world and challenges the scholarly narrative of the ‘sudden arrival’ of modernity in Nepal in the 1950s.
