Abstract

Nudging is a strategy used to influence behavior by changing the environment. In this study, we investigated nudging as a teaching strategy to support autonomous learning behaviors in VET-students. Three nudges were experimentally tested: a video booth to support planning and deadline adherence, a checklist to support course work completion, and goal-setting to encourage students to ask questions during class. Results revealed a positive effect of goal-setting on grades and a positive trend for questions asked. We found increased self-reported planning behavior in the video booth group – but no decrease in missed deadlines. No effect was found for the checklist. We conclude that nudging has potential as a quick and effective teaching strategy for some autonomous learning behaviors.
