Un Día De Lo "Padre": A Multigenerational Plática With Bilingual Preservice Teachers and Their Elders, Sharing Perspectivas About Translanguaging and Bilingual Education

Abstract

In university bilingual educator preparation programs, we frequently discuss issues around language, culture, and teaching. Topics emerge regarding dialogues first generation college students have with their families about maintaining the “purity” of a language while concurrently navigating the waters of a translanguaging corriente (García, Johnson, & Seltzer, 2017). Here we examine these perspectives after witnessing a snapshot of this dialogue as undergraduate bilingual pre-service Latin@ teachers in a university Second Language Acquisition course invited their elders to class. Amidst food, music, tears, and risas, we were honored to participate in this conversation about the tension around translanguaging and the idea of Spanish-language maintenance. The implications of these critical conversations are significant to bilingual pre-service teachers and university bilingual preparation programs.
