Exploring Agency as a Mitigating Factor in Literacy

Abstract

In order to navigate the increasingly challenging demands and develop the knowledge, skills, and mindsets to thrive in the 21st century, students must develop agency. A critical next step in advancing more equitable learning opportunities in classrooms is understanding how agency intersects in literacy particularly for students from marginalized student populations. The following research is part of a larger research project of literacy instruction and student agency across 11 public elementary schools in the Pacific Northwest region of the US. In this research, the research team examined the relationship of student agency to literacy achievement-specifically reading comprehension. Findings explore the role of student agency as a mitigating factor in literacy learning environments.
