Understanding and Working With Immigrants Toward Equity: Educators' Engagement With Critical Theory

Abstract

We/authors discuss the effort of a grant team towards building a just, diverse, and equitable community using critical approaches, and in support of preparing pre-service and in-service teachers to work with diverse students. The team designed a free, online professional development (PD) modular course that addressed critical approaches to race, immigration, English Language Learners (ELLs)/ Emerging Bilinguals (EBs), gender, and sexual orientation. For this paper, we examined participants’ perceptions, growth, and development in understanding critical perspectives on issues of immigration.
