Facilitating Professional Development for Coaches Through Cross-District Collaboration

Fri, April 22, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This study illuminates the experiences of a Digital Learning Coach (DL) and STEM/Literacy Coach (STEM/L) as they engaged in PD over two years, facilitated by a researcher. Meeting field notes and interviews were qualitatively analyzed. The findings offer a glimpse into the (1) Benefits of Cross-District Collaboration; (2) Resourcing Coaching: Common Challenges; (3) Career-long Desire to Learn; (4) Time: Building and Sustaining Cross-Collaboration. Conclusions suggest that DL and STEM/L coaches benefit from their own dedicated, differentiated program of PL supported by coach mentors from other districts and/or university researchers. Importantly, this can support coaches’ professional growth and provide professional affirmations. Educational implications are offered for university researchers and other stakeholders.
