Abstract

With collective goals of supporting U.S. collegiate-athlete student success, a considerable amount of research has focused on psychosocial factors associated with achievement. Due to various factors examined in the literature and mixed findings across studies, a research synthesis is needed to aggregate evidence on this topic. From a systematic review of 83 quantitative studies, we generated qualitatively a grounded theory that introduces a theory-driven approach for modeling a wide range of psychosocial factors. Through a thematic analysis, we developed the Collegiate Athlete Psychosocial Factor and Achievement Model, capturing eleven psychosocial categories within three interactive layers of the student-athlete, campus, and society. We demonstrate how qualitative analytic approaches can be leveraged in research syntheses and provide direction for meta-analyses.
