Textbooks are curriculum material that is frequently used for daily instructional practice. There is some evidence that textbooks have an effect on mathematics achievement measured with national curriculum-based tests. Most studies analyze effects on specific mathematical domains. The goal of this study is to analyze the effect of textbooks on student achievement on the German TIMSS 2019 data. This study contributes to the existing research by providing further evidence for an additional country on textbook effects using the most recent TIMSS data and generalizing the analyses on textbook effects in Germany on a broader (international) mathematics measure. The results of our study show a substantial effect of mathematics textbooks on students’ achievement.
