Examining User Characteristics and Online Behavioral Patterns: A Web Analytics Study

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine user characteristics and online behavioral patterns of a professional development (PD) website geared towards elementary teachers. A secondary aim was to investigate the patterns of use of the PD website during two critical time periods: 1. Pre-COVID lockdown (November, 2019 to January, 2020), and 2. During the initial COVID lockdown (March, 2020 to May 2020). Data sources included an open source web analytics software program and visitor log profiles. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. Results indicate significant differences between return and non-return users (p < .05), suggesting that return users visited the website with specific intentions and goals. Four distinct profiles of behavior for return users were also identified.
