Factors Predicting the Actual Use of Assistive Technology Among Special Educators During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This predictive correlational study sought to understand to what extent the constructs of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) predicted actual use of assistive technology (AT) and/or Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) among special educators during remote learning, which was a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic. 104 special educators participated in the study by completing a researcher-designed survey. Results of the correlation analyses demonstrated a significant association between each predictor variable and the criterion variable (i.e., actual use of AT/AAC). Students’ effort expectancy and social influence made significant individual contributions to the model. These findings indicate the importance of school-to-home partnerships to ensure the successful use of AT/AAC with K-12 special education students in remote learning situations.
