In this study, we use data from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to explore both the identity and environmental factors that influence science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors’ likelihood of participating in undergraduate research. We center our study, of nearly 50,000 participants, around the experiences of minoritized college students. Preliminary results illustrate several environmental factors that predict participation in undergraduate research, including how many high-impact practices (HIPs) a student has participated in, institutional type, and institutional selectivity. In the final paper, we will disaggregate these findings by several identity variables (race, gender, sexual identity, first-generation status, international student status, and disability status) to specifically examine the predictors of undergraduate research for STEM majors holding minoritized identities.
