Tue, April 26, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), AERA Virtual Poster Rooms, AERA Virtual Poster Room 1

Abstract

The purpose of this action research was to explore the perceptions of students on the role that self-assessment played on their academic development. The major goals of the study were: 1) explore the perceptions of students on the value of self-assessment on their academic development and, 2) explore how their perceptions vary by gender and instructor’s assessment. The research was grounded in self-regulated learning frames and data was collected through a triangulated approach that includes students’ self-assessed checklists, reflections, instructors’ assessment, and focus group interviews. Themes that emerged from the preliminary results include focused-thinking on quality, growth mindset, goal to exceed faculty expectation, self-directed learning, and personal accountability. The findings for this action research study have practical and leadership implications.
