Technology-enhanced teaching and learning is evolving rapidly in surgical education, including the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. Nonetheless, the field is still in its infancy. Hence, we conducted a scoping review to explore the current roles of AI in surgical education. Our scoping review yielded 14,008 unique sources of evidence. After full-text analysis, 93 were included. Eighty-four studies were conducted in the simulation setting, and 89 targeted technical skills. Fifty-six focused on skills assessment/classification, 36 used multiple AI techniques, including neural networks, and support vector machines, and the majority used multiple metrics, including rating scales, and motion metrics (e.g. time, path length). Our results will help surgical educators and researchers identify gaps that require further investigation.
