En La Brega With a Puerto Rican Epistemology

Herein, I introduce a Puerto Rican Epistemology (PRE) which is based on the Puerto Rican concepts of La Lucha (Castillo-Montoya & Torres-Guzman, 2012), Jaibería, (Grosfoguel et al., 1998), Negotiation (Del Moral, 2013), and Bregar (Quiñones, 2003). Without essentializing what a Puerto Rican is, or does, or feels, we can capture nuances with our conceptual framework and account for Puerto Rican agency and instances where Puerto Ricans are disempowered, for example, and have engaged in practices of Negotiation, Jaibería, La Brega and la Lucha as strategies for survival and resistance. A PRE conceptual framework can also animate the communal nature of a research project where both participant and researcher collectively are en la lucha y la brega, making meaning together.
