Supporting Science Teachers in the Post-COVID Era: The LaCuKnoS Model

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Rancho Santa Fe 2

Abstract

Pressing socio-scientific challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and health care access have been clearly shown to disproportionately affect minoritized groups while having serious consequences for all. Solutions to these challenges will require multidisciplinary and justice-centered approaches, with K-12 science education having a key role to play. In line with the annual meeting theme, we describe our initial work on a new pedagogical model for supporting teachers in making science learning more meaningful, approachable, and relevant for all students. Given pressing global and national needs, science education should place greater emphasis on helping students make sense of societal challenges and opportunities that directly affect students’ daily lives, their communities, and society broadly.
