The Power of Reflections in Guiding Student Learning During Service-Learning Trips

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyze the reflections of nursing students from the same nursing school to gain further insights into their learning during a service-learning immersion experience. The data from 34 trip participants were examined over five years of service-learning trips to Kenya. The data were collected through debrief sessions during the trip, responses to journal prompts, and field notes. Recordings of the debrief sessions were transcribed, and field notes and responses to journal prompts were read through and organized. Thematic analysis was employed to examine the data and determine the main themes and their relationships. The three main themes from all the data are: cultural dissonance; navigating medical differences; and applications to professional practice.
