Endarkened Feminist Narrative: A Black Feminist Approach to Qualitative Inquiry

Abstract

Endarkened Feminist Narrative (EFN) is a culturally responsive qualitative research approach for inquiry by Black women, with Black women, and for Black women. This approach marries the praxis of narrative inquiry with the sacred storytelling tradition and spiritual transmission that is foundational to Afrocentric cultural heritage. The practice of EFN, which recognizes research as a spiritual act, draws from Dillard’s (2016) process of (re)membering, Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth model, and Tillman’s (2002) description of culturally relevant research. Using Sister Talks and Sister Circles, the inquirer cultivates a sense of interdependency and solidarity while gathering Narrative data honoring the nuance of Black women’s stories as portrayed by their unique voices.
