Do Latent Undergraduate School Profiles Predict Submission of GRE Scores to Test-Optional Graduate Programs?

Abstract

Using admissions data of graduate programs that adopted test-optional policies and applicants’ undergraduate institutional data, we explored latent profiles of institutional characteristics and examined how these latent profiles and individuals' undergraduate GPA are associated with individuals’ likelihood to submit admissions test scores to graduate programs. We identified three latent profiles defined as 1) large, selective, public university 2) medium size, moderately selective, high White student % university 3) small, less-selective, high Black student %, private university. We found that individuals’ undergraduate latent profiles and demographic backgrounds were associated with the test score submission status, whereas the undergraduate GPA did not.
