The Readiness Continuum: A Relational Ethnographic Study of Students' Transition to College

Abstract

This relational ethnography explores the concept of college readiness and the process of transitioning to college. College readiness is often conceptualized as something that students achieve in high school through a variety of socialization processes. The finding in this study illustrate how college readiness is continually achieved through high school and college. This reconceptualization of college readiness involves an examination of the processes that either limit or open opportunities for students in terms of access to higher education. Thus, this study develops the term the readiness continuum to describe this process.
