Equitable Education: Experiences Voiced by Women of Color

Abstract

Exploring the experiences of women of color seeking leadership positions in the field of
education has led to a better understanding of how universities and educational organizations can create inclusive and supportive environments for women of color. Participants were women of color who received their doctoral degree in educational leadership within the last 12 years and currently work as leaders in the field of education. Results suggest that there are many challenges and obstacles faced by these women. Throughout the process of interviewing these women, the following questions guided our understanding: 1) What challenges do women of color face when
getting a doctorate degree and working in educational leadership? 2) What recommendations for
doctoral programs are needed to support women of color as they enter and exit their programs?
and 3) How did their doctoral program in educational leadership contribute to the attainment of
educational leadership positions and promotions?
