We present findings from a review literature on ambitious mathematics teaching (AMT) using Gutiérrez’s (2009, 2012) equity framework to analyze how equity has evolved within research on AMT. Literature was identified through database searches and snowball sampling. Through an iterative qualitative literature synthesis we identified themes and trends in the research on AMT. Early studies on reform mathematics (and AMT) highlighted the importance of teaching “all” students, and equity was primarily focused on access and achievement. More recent work has focused on identity and power, along with access and achievement. However, multiple researchers identify challenges in developing and sustaining ambitious, equitable math reforms. We discuss implications for future research as well as practice in fostering and sustaining AMT.
