Paradoxes of Entangled (Non)Reflective Navel-Gazing in Experimental Qualitative Research

Abstract

This conceptual and experimental paper addresses (qualitative) researchers’ events of navel-gazing, and paradoxical processes of entangled (non)reflection. We discuss reflections within inquiry, citational practices, scholarly writing as we experiment with bodily (non)reflection where the navel-gazing and gaze (of a navel) is turned inwards, outwards, and in-between. While many ‘personal characteristics’ are considered important for disclosure (e.g., race, class, sexuality, ability), we wondered about complicated positionalities, entangled subjectivities, intersecting identities, nuanced embodiments, senses and affects, and bodily performativity in the context of qualitative inquiry. We questioned how the process of defining and declaring positioning, bodily entanglements, and personal and collective assumptions has become highly politized and could serve as a way of excusing and even ignoring difference and self-promotion.
