Development of an Instrument to Assess Middle School Students' Online-Metacognitive Competency in Solving Chemistry Problems

Abstract

Online-metacognitive competency refers to cognition about cognition during task processing. It could monitor and control one’s thoughts, which might be an important factor for solving chemistry problems successfully. However, students’ online-metacognitive competency is hard to observe and often ignored by teachers. This study aimed to develop an instrument to assess middle school students’ online-metacognitive competency in solving chemistry problems. This instrument was developed through a pilot test, followed by a field test. In Jiangsu, China, a total of 494 middle school students (253 girls and 241 boys) took part in the study. The Rasch analysis results indicate that the measures from this instrument are valid and reliable, thus appropriate for assessing student online-metacognitive competency.
