Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the sources of summative assessment literacy for novice language teachers in Sweden and Finland. Data were collected from a group of teachers who recently graduated from three pre-service teacher education programs through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The data analysis included descriptive statistics for the questionnaire data and thematic content analysis for the interview data. The preliminary results indicate that teachers perceive pre-service teacher education as the main source of their conceptual understanding while they attribute their skills mostly to experience in schools. Swedish and Finnish teachers differ in their perceptions of the role of teacher education in developing their summative assessment conceptual understanding and skills.
