The Ethical Dissonance and Online Disinhibition Effect in Cyberbullying Incidents

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of ethical dissonance, online disinhibition effect and ethical judgment on students’ cyberbullying behavior. 130 Chinese college students participated in this study and two instruments were employed. The t-test analysis showed that gender differences existed in the toxic disinhibition effect and certain cyberbullying incidents. The correlation analysis indicated that the toxic disinhibition effect and ethical judgment were correlated with certain cyberbullying experiences, respectively. Finally, the regression analysis showed that gender, ethical dissonance index, two disinhibition effects and ethical judgment could jointly predict the three forms of cyberbullying experience. The researchers provided suggestions for preventing cyberbullying based on the results.
