Abstract

The research deals with the effect of flexible thinking and intrinsic motivation on students' learning outcomes in a Massive open online course (MOOC) and a F2F course. Further, the study examines the effect of intrinsic motivation as a mediator between flexible thinking and learning outcomes. The sample was divided into two groups: the first group studied the course as a MOOC (N=141) and the second F2F (N=63). Results showed that only in MOOC environment, intrinsic motivation at Time 2 (at the end of the course) predicted learning outcomes in a MOOC environment. Further, in MOOC environment, motivation (Time 2) served as mediator between flexible thinking (Time1- at the beginning of the course) and learning outcomes in Time 2.
