Abstract

World History instruction often ostensibly focuses on locations and pasts outside the United States. Even with this intention by World History teachers, the United States enters into US world history classrooms. In this study of four midwestern World History teachers in the same state, I explore how the United States is positioned as a result of the decision making of the participants. Through the descriptions of the teacher participants, they present the United States in complicated, sometimes contradictory ways that positioned the United States as both an example to other countries and separate from global events and concerns.
