Abstract

International trends in environmental and sustainability education in teacher education (ESE-TE) research, are reported in this scoping literature review. 2,142 research articles spanning over five decades and 81 countries were screened. Of 707 eligible articles, data from 339 studies have been analyzed thus far. Preliminary analysis of the research included quantifying the geographic, temporal, and methodological trends, and a qualitative exploration of the research problems/context themes. 85% of the research articles examined were empirical. The most prevalent problems investigated across all of the studies centred on the themes of TE commonplaces (37%), competencies and literacy (21%), and program mainstreaming & challenges (14%). Results suggest that more research in the context of TE praxis is needed.
