The development of mathematical reasoning skills has become of increasing focus in research regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics. This research utilizes a simulation-based learning research tool called the scriptwriting task, in which pre-service teachers completed a dialogue/script of a classroom simulation, to investigate how pre-service teachers assist students work through difficulties and help them in justifying their reasoning. This simulation provides an examination of pre-service teacher moves to support student reasoning that the pre-service teachers utilize in their scripts by considering their imagined actions and choice of words to assist students. Scripts from forty-one pre-service teachers were examined and five clusters based on the employed teacher moves for supporting student reasoning were formed with implications for teacher education.
