Motivational Profiles of Postsecondary Students With Disabilities and Their Relations With Educational Outcomes

Abstract

We investigated latent motivational profiles of post-secondary students with disabilities using a person-centered approach. We also examined similarities and differences among profiles regarding students’ educational outcomes and personal characteristics. Latent profile analyses revealed three discriminable profiles. Students in the three profiles also differed in their educational outcomes. In addition, these three profiles showed meaningful associations with students’ characteristics including educational background and disability degree. Findings of the present study suggest the necessary of considering special students as a heterogeneous group when investigating their learning motivation and taking into consideration of their expectancy, value, cost, and goal beliefs in order to better capture their motivational profiles in the school setting.
