The Courage to Be Unsettled: A Narrative Inquiry With Non-Indigenous Academics in Canada

Abstract

Since 2015, Canadian universities have been developing and grappling with strategic plans in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions 94 Calls to Action, compelling them to learn the shameful truth about the Indian Residential School System and to work towards reconciliation with Indigenous peoples in the territory that is now called Canada.

Four non-Indigenous, settler academics and one Narrative Inquirer explored the professors’ experiences of participating in a faculty learning community on Indigenization. In this conference presentation, the researcher will share a brief overview of the resulting four narrative accounts, in order to set the context for discussing the resonant threads that arose from them.
