Abstract

In this duoethnography, two Black Mother Scholars explore the parallels and intersections of our lived experiences birthing children amidst a global pandemic and witnessing state-sanctioned violence against Black bodies in 2020. To guide our conversations, we revisited poetry, journal entries, and letters to our respective children written in 2020 while we were expecting and subsequently caring for them, as well as news articles documenting national events during that time. Our analysis is grounded in a Black feminist conceptual framing. Additionally, we discuss the lessons we have learned—including their applications to our scholarship and teaching— regarding communal care, choosing joy, the healing power of love, and spiritually-grounded hope, as well as our liberatory imaginings for Black mothers and children.
