Social Determinants of Learning: Representation and Opportunity to Promote Diversity Among Health Professions Students

Abstract

Social determinants of learning are contextual conditions and variables that impact students’ ability to optimally participate in their education. Social determinants of learning impact all students, and often negatively impact those from minoritized backgrounds and identities. The health professions are facing a critical disparity between the limited representation of minoritized students enrolled in health professions education programs compared to the diversity of our society. This paper explains the relationship between social determinants of learning and the lack of student diversity in health professions education. Further it discusses the consequences this has on healthcare outcomes, and shares opportunities for academic and clinical educators to improve social determinants of learning in health professions education.
