Abstract

Since research and practice indicates school principals have strong, but indirect impact on student achievement making professional development (PD) for school principals a crucial component for school improvement. However, leadership coaching remains an underdeveloped and understudied area. Framed by certain domains of leadership, including instructional and distributed models, our mixed methods case study addresses this gap in research and offers an alternative coaching model with the goal of adopting authentic shared leadership between principals, other members of the administrative team, teacher leaders, and community members. Lastly, our preliminary implications for practice include practical applications for transitioning from distributed leadership to a more comprehensive shared leadership by building the capacity of teacher leadership and community participation in Instructional Leadership Teams (ILTs).
