Dream Big: Cultivating College Predisposition Among Rural BIPOC Students

Abstract

Rural students are more likely to begin K-12 schooling “school-ready” and graduate from high school but are less likely to engage in post-secondary education opportunities. While the literature on rural student college choices is emergent, there is limited attention to the experience of students identifying as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC). Here I will present results from a project actively engaging BIPOC students in college choice activities. While results are constrained due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are indicators that this programming impacted student college predisposition and as such is worthy of replication.
