The Impact of Participating in Reciprocal Peer Review on Students' Writing

Abstract

Peer review has been shown to be an effective means to support students’ academic writing skills. Recent studies have begun to explore how student participation in the peer review process impacts their revision process. This study contributes to this area by exploring how graduate students revise their writing following their participation in an in-class, reciprocal peer review session. Findings showed that most participants made revisions directly connected to feedback they received during peer review. Furthermore, students’ revised drafts showed a significant improvement in overall writing quality, as well as in content development, written communication, and APA formatting, as compared to their pre-peer review drafts. This study supports peer review as a means of assisting students in their academic writing.
