Parents Shaping Children's Science Imaginations in a Family Meteorology Workshop

Tue, April 26, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), AERA Virtual Poster Rooms, AERA Virtual Poster Room 1

Abstract

This paper presents data from a study examining 22 families’ science imaginations related to weather across seven meteorology workshops where each family prototyped a weather station for local community stakeholders. Our video-based analysis revealed how parents engaged children in making weather imaginations by drawing upon family’s prior experience, questions, and material resources. The study contributes to the literature on informal learning and imagination in science learning.
