How Do School Leaders Make Judgment Calls? A Systematic Review of Decision-Making Literature (1966–2019)

Abstract

This study aims to examine school leaders’ decision-making approaches. This study systematically reviewed 189 articles, published from 1966 to 2019, on leaders’ decision making. The most frequently examined decision-making approach is shared decision making, followed by data- and evidence-oriented, ethical/moral, rational, and contingency decision making. Those decision-making approaches sometimes work together, but other times work against one another. This study calls for an expansive scope of decision-making training in school leadership preparation programs.
