Lecture Capture in the World of Digital Natives: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract

This paper describes an exploratory sequential mixed methods study that addresses how lecture capture is used in higher education courses. The methodological purpose is to illustrate how interviews can be used to develop a survey with a theoretical framework at the center. The qualitative interviews were analyzed using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model. The results of the interviews informed the creation of a survey that was administered to 795 students. 151 completed surveys were then analyzed. Results from both phases suggest that students felt lecture capture recordings helped them understand the course material, prepare for tests and quizzes, and helped them achieve higher grades than if the recordings had not been available.
